permanent exhibition in the old royal palace
The “Castle Museum” is the original idea of the first Czechoslovak president T. G. Masaryk. However, the definitive impetus for its implementation came from Václav Havel. The permanent exhibition entitled The Story of Prague Castle in one of the most valuable historical buildings of this complex — the Old Royal Palace — is still a unique exhibition of castle collections with a high number of visitors. The focus of the Stories is the “blue route”. Its content is divided into eleven historical stylistic stages in the logic of the timeline. It is intended to serve as a concentrated excursion through the most important historical objects from the castle collections. Closed sub-circuits — stories that focus on selected topics to an intensified extent — are “hung” on the main axis.
The actual design of the installation was preceded by a stage of structural modifications to the exceptionally protected areas of the Old Royal Palace. For the newly inserted elements enabling the palace to be used for exhibition purposes (new floors, staircases, railings), elements made of black or stainless steel in combination with glass were used as a rule. This materialization is intended to allow these elements to be read as an admittedly inserted modern building layer.
